News from the ACO

Who We Are
President's Letter
The ACO is growing faster than it's ever grown before. We now have over 200 professional members and about half again as many associate members. As Ari Tuckman wrote in his book Integrative Treatment of Adult ADHD, coaching "is the part that was missing from many of these client’s former therapies.” And Russell Barkley's research on executive function also points to coaching as an important part of any plan for living well with ADHD. So this growth of the ACO reflects both the growing awareness of and interest in ADHD Coaching, and it is a great thing for the ADHD community we serve. Read more here.

Speakers, Recordings, and You Marketing YOU at the 2013 ACO Conference
The lineup of speakers is impressive - almost as impressive as our listserv these days. Have you been on it lately? It’s awesome! Members are planning to meet in Atlanta and talk about ASD. It sounds like a perk for going to the conference! This is not unusual activity at our international conference. Members meet up and find so much in common that before you know it great relationships are built. Here is the link.

Reaching The Hearts And The Minds Of Adults With ADHD
What I’ve learned during the past 25 years of counseling women and men with the strengths and struggles of adult ADHD is above all to remember that these individuals are human beings first and foremost-like anyone else, not just a person with this broad label of ADHD. They want what anyone else wants- to be seen, known and cared about, to connect, and to make a meaningful contribution using their strengths. They need support and they need to learn to create and maintain respectful, reciprocal relationships. Read more here.

Welcoming The First Group of New Members in 2013
Let's welcome new members to the community! Visit their profiles and maybe drop them a line to say hello. Not all profiles are 100% complete - yet. So, if you've been meaning to complete yours, or update it for that matter, we've made it easy for you to do so now. Read more here.

Support group for men? You betcha!
The bit you're reading isn't about adding any value to your own business. So if that's what you're looking for, read no further. Also, it's not about a coaching group, but a support group, and that, I believe is very different.

On the other hand, maybe you'll be more successful at finding clients this way than I was. And maybe, giving something back is part of your mission. Read more here.

CHADD Conference RFP Update
Well, good news for all of us procrastinators! CHADD has extended its due date for proposals for its 25th Annual International Conference by almost two weeks. The new due date is February 12th. We hope there will be a lot of great coaching proposals submitted and therefore a lot of great presentations at the 2013 conference! If you’re stymied on what you might present on, call up your coach or colleague and brainstorm! Read more here.

Themes or Resolutions
In January 2011, I resolved to apply to a master's program and to learn how to get better sleep (seemingly incompatible!). By January 2012, I was enrolled at Argosy University, Atlanta, but still seeking sleep. This January 2013, I completed one year of graduate school and discovered I live with asthma, one source of my exhaustion. I am getting better sleep. (Oh, and if you take progesterone be sure to take it AT NIGHT. Part of its job is to put you to sleep, not good during the day.) Read more here.
