News from the ACO

Being Prepared
President Joyce Kubik writes, “Our profession is, by definition, based on a DSM diagnosis. As such, we are statistically more likely than other life coaches to encounter clients who are clinically anxious or depressed.” Read more here.

The 'S' Word
Guest Contributor Tim Kelley, the well-known life-purpose coach, wrote a great article for his community about what to do when a client mentions the ‘S’ word – suicide. The article is highly relevant to our community and is reprinted here with permission. Read more here.

Coaches in the News
Mindy Katz and Terry Matlen were interviewed for an article posted at PsychCentral.com, and two articles on coaching--by coaches--made the top 50 at the JAD. Read more here.

Welcome New and Returning Members
We acknowledge and welcome our growing community of ADHD coaches and supporters worldwide. Please take a moment to personally reach out and welcome them.

Research Highlight: Sleep and ADHD
Sleep is a challenging issue for many of our clients with ADHD. Understanding sleep problems (and solutions!) is one of the ways coaches can help their clients. Sleep research is a big arena, but recent articles look directly at sleep in relationship to ADHD: Here's one study on sleep in children from the ADHD Report: Sleep Hygiene in Children with ADHD: Findings and Recommendations, and another that studied sleep in adults from the JAD: Associations Between Sleep Characteristics, Seasonal Depressive Symptoms, Lifestyle, and ADHD Symptoms in Adults.

To access these studies online, you must first log into your ACO member account, then log into the JAD and the ADHD Report.

Why You Should Go To The Conference
Here are some of the things members are saying about the ACO Conference:

  • [Last year] was the first conference I attended, I learned a lot. I have also become part of a wonderful group of people. I am so looking forward to this year's conference.
  • The connection with gifted ADHD coaches helped me add to my professional toolbox. Also, I loved the laughter and sharing with people who “get” ADHD.
  • It's like camp for the brain—love it!

This is the one conference in the world targeted at exactly your professional needs. You will learn a lot, you will get a chance to meet and talk with many interesting and dynamic colleagues, and all your meals are included. This conference is one hell of a deal! So if you haven’t already, sign up now (before you forget) so you won't miss out on your own great personal and professional experiences at the upcoming ACO Conference.

Looking for Writers
Publishing in Circle is a great way to get your name and contact information out and it increases your expert presence. We are looking for more writers of guest columns, of research reviews, of coaches in the news, etc. If you like to edit or write and think this might be a great way to both get and give in your professional sphere, contact editor@adhdcoaches.org.

Institute of Coaching Research Director Opening
The Institute of Coaching is seeking a part time Director of Research. In addition, pending approval from Harvard Medical School, the successful applicant will be offered a faculty position (Instructor) at Harvard. Read more here.

CHADD's Call for Papers
The quality of the coaching track at CHADD conferences depends on YOU.
The vast majority of coaching track presenters in 2013 were ACO members, and we encourage members to step up. This year, the conference will be held November 13-15, 2014 in Chicago, IL. CHADD is seeking content on: Diagnosis and Treatment, Collaborative Practices, Learning Differences, Research, Smoking and ADHD, Implementation of IDEA and Section 504, Advocacy Empowerment, Multimodal Treatment, Parent Training, Co-existing Conditions, Cultural Diversity, and Coaching. If you've got something to say on any of these topics but have never submitted a CHADD RFP before, check out this article on submitting a winning proposal. Proposals are due by Friday, February 28 and should be submitted here.
